BLACKPOOL SOUTH

It’s difficult to imagine that looking at the present station with its single platform and waiting shelter, that not too long ago Blackpool South boasted four platforms, all with canopies, a very busy goods yard, and full passenger facilities. However, in November 1964 the true terminus of the line, Blackpool Central, was closed with South taking over the role. The demise of Central marked a steady decline to this section of the Fylde’s rail system (some might argue that Blackpool as a seaside town started to decline at the same time).

Both Central and South were both very busy stations, especially during the summer season. Although it can never reach those heady heights again, Blackpool South is still well used, its location is convenient for nearby hotels, shops, Waterloo Crown Green Bowling, and is a short walk away from Bloomfield Road, the home of Blackpool F.C.
